RAAZ and RAAZ... TMC directors are good friends!

Posted on Jan 01 2009 1:21 AM by Rimsha

RAAZ...THE MYSTERY CONTINUES is being touted as one of the most awaited movies of the New Year, and the latest spine–chilling promos are a testimony to the fact that excitement in the film industry is not without any basis. The young director of the film, Mohit Suri, who made a name for himself with some good and successful films like ZEHER, KALYUG, WOH LAMHE and AWARAPAN, is very confident about his next venture.

When quizzed about whether he felt scared that his film would be compared to the biggest hit of 2002, the super–hit RAAZ, he said that he does but this fear has made him put more effort in the film and he has used it positively rather than negatively. He also clarified that he is still good friends with Vikram Bhatt, whom he considers his guru and mentor, and all the talks of a difference between them is rubbish. He added that the rumor has stemmed from the fact that he and not Vikram was chosen by the Bhatts to do the film.

While a few egoist directors have actually spoiled their relationship after not being offered the sequel to their previous hits (lets not get into the specifics here), there is nothing of that sort between Vikram and Mohit, who remain good friends. And in fact Mohit drops in often to meet Vikram as he finds his company refreshing.

Bollywood box-office report of the week

Posted on Jan 01 2009 1:13 AM by Rimsha

With another another 'releaseless' week, it augurs well for the GHAJINI mania to continue (but more about that later) and also for the older release, Aditya Chopra's Shah Rukh Khan Super–hit, RAB NE BANA DI JODI.

It was expected that the last big release of the year would take a stupendous start but no one had thought that it would be like a tornado, across India and continue for the full extended weekend! It does not take rocket science to guess that we are talking about A.R. Murugadoss's Aamir Khan starrer GHAJINI. Released on Christmas at 66 cinemas, and the next day at 34 other cinemas of Bombay–Thane, thru Studio 18, the film saw an outstanding to sensational opening. Outside of Bombay the opening was mind–numbing everywhere. Trade predicts that GHAJINI is a surefire hit, which is already on its way to writing box–office history, as far as its initial business is concerned. While its individual territory distributors will make profits, the fate of its all–India distributor (Indian Films) hangs in balance because it has paid a fortune for acquiring the rights. The film has also done superbly in the US (26th–28th weekend) grossing $ 13, 87, 534 but has a decent $463,733 from UK.

The film that released with GHAJINI, Percept Picture Company's animated JUMBO, that had as its USP the voiceover by Akshay Kumar, released at 41 cinemas of Bombay–Thane on Christmas and at a further 15 cinemas the next day, saw surprisingly quite a good opening! The opening day was also quite decent at most places, at limited shows. However, trade feels that JUMBO is an ordinary fare with the extraneous advantage of Christmas holidays and the intrinsic advantage of Akshay Kumar being a part of the film. Still, it will not be worth the price Percept is reportedly said to have paid to rope in Akshay Kumar (Rs. 8 to 9 crore).

The December 18 release, veteran superstar Rajesh Khanna's WAFAA, met with a sorry fate. The film collected 8 lakhs from Bombay, 2.15 lakhs from Pune and 2.50 lakhs from Delhi city. The film is obviously a supreme flop.
Coming to Yash Raj's Aditya Chopra directed Shah Rukh Khan starrer, RAB NE BANA DI JODI, the film has steady collections to show in its second week as it has held on very well. It is super strong in small centres also. Checking out the numbers, RNBDJ collected 3.50 crores from Bombay, 91 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 33 lakhs from Baroda, 7 lakhs from Bharuch, 4.30 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 4 lakhs from Mehsana, 28.35 lakhs from Surat, 5.15 lakhs from Valsad and Vapi, 3.50 lakhs from Anand, 4 lakhs from Navsari, 21.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 4.60 lakhs from Jamnagar, 5.25 lakhs from Bhavanagar, 94 lakhs from Pune, 7.15 lakhs from Kohlapur, 13.25 lakhs from Nasik, 16.30 lakhs from Goa, 2.40 crores from Delhi city, 37.25 lakhs from Noida, 24.15 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 14.15 lakhs from Kanpur, 43.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 10 lakhs from Agra, 7.60 lakhs from Aligarh, 46.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 17.75 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.10 lakhs from Panipat, 1.50 crores from Calcutta, 3.10 lakhs from Ranchi, 4.25 lakhs from Guwahati, 35 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.75 lakhs from Amravati and Akola, 16.40 lakhs from Raipur, 29.15 lakhs from Indore, 7.60 lakhs from Gwalior, 47.60 lakhs from Jaipur, 6.40 lakhs from Jodhpur, 5 lakhs from Bikaner, 84.15 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2 lakhs from Warangal, 7.10 lakhs from Aurangabad, 3 lakhs from Nanded, 6 lakhs from Mangalore and 3 lakhs from Davangere. Adding another 25.50 crores, RAB NE BANA DI JODI has netted a huge 67.50 crores in two weeks from India. Reliable sections of the trade have already declared the Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Vinay Pathak starrer a super–hit, based on its moderate budget (for an SRK starrer). The way the film has performed during its third weekend, it will not be long before it is termed a blockbuster. In the Overseas, RAB NE BANA DI JODI, already a super–hit, has till the second weekend grossed a big $1,766,838 in the UK and a very impressive $ 15, 88,714 from the US.

Checking out an older release, Abhay Deol's OYE LUCKY! LUCKY OYE!, the film collected 4.50 lakhs from Bombay, 7 lakhs from Delhi city, 2 lakhs from Noida, 1.15 lakhs from Ghaziabad and 3 lakhs from Gurgaon. And it means that after its four week run, the film has netted around 6.75 crores from India. The film can now be upgraded to an average status. Quite creditable indeed, given the odds!

Yet again our last entry of this week is Karan Johar's Tarun Mansukhani directed DOSTANA. Checking out its numbers (perhaps for the last time), the collections are 8 lakhs from Bombay, 3 lakhs from Delhi city, 1 lakh from Noida and 3.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding another 25 lakhs, DOSTANA has netted 45 crores in six weeks from India. Based on its collections so far, the Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Bobby Deol (special appearance) starrer is an above average fare. The film has had a very impressive run in the overseas market, grossing $1,444,246 from UK and $1,243,910 from the US.

Good, bad and ugly of animation movies in 2008

Posted on Dec 31 2008 1:28 AM by Rimsha

There were quite a few animation films that released in 2008. However, not even one of them turned out to be successful at the box office. ROADSIDE ROMEO at least stood out from animation point of view while JUMBO made waves due to Akshay Kumar factor. However, rest just fizzled completely hence putting a question mark on the future of animation films in India. Here is a low down on the performance of some of the most notable animation films which were unleashed to the audience in the year gone by.
ROADSIDE ROMEO:
If not for Yash Raj Films' practice of promoting their films to the minimal, ROADSIDE ROMEO could well have been the second Bollywood animation film to have worked with the audience after HANUMAN. While one or two have still been decent attempts at the least, the remaining have been plain shoddy.

Things could have just gone right for ROADSIDE ROMEO had it been pitched amongst the audience in a better way. It was released sans any fanfare and worse, the two best parts about the film – its animation and coming together of Saif and Kareena behind the mike – were not just not highlighted enough for the audience.

ROADSIDE ROMEO may not be quite emotionally charged or hilariously funny like its Hollywood counterparts. But still, it is watchable at the least. And for that, most of the credit should go to Tata Elexsi – VCL that has managed to get some stupendous 3D animation in place. Whether it is shot taking, moving frames, transition from one situation to another, lip movements or lighting – everything about ROADSIDE ROMEO comes across as a fresh experience. In fact for those who haven't been exposed to the Hollywood animation flicks, this is a truly unique experience.

WATCH FOR YOUR FAVORITE STARS

Posted on Dec 15 2008 4:38 AM by Rimsha

Isn't it a matter of big relief for India that even in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks in financial capital of India, killing over hundred and injuring several hundreds in Mumbai, five movies are releasing there this Friday? Great indeed. Bravo Mumbaiites!! Of the five movies, 'Dil Kabbadi' is the most romantic entertainer, perhaps. The movie begins with Irfan Khan announcing from the rooftop that husbands and wives have nothing to do with romance! Yes, despite all this, the movie is quite romantic. The movie depicts the true picture of most of the households, if not all. The movie emphasizes that in the most of the cities though husbands and wives live under the same roof, yet there is no love lost among them.

They begin the day with some or the other quarrel among them. However, they soon go to their jobs. The housewives do talk to their confidant neighbors about their day's quarrelsome tales and exchange their problems among them, both at home or in office. This shows that they have no romance or love for each other. No, it's not that. They forget it when the couples meet in the evening after their respective jobs. However, there are a few cases where the quarrel takes a wrong turn. Nowadays, Indian couples are following in the footsteps of the Westerners and therefore husband and wife disputes are growing too fast and entering courtrooms.

In 'Dil Kabaddi', justly titled and meaning that hearts play the game of kabaddi, Irfan finds his wife Soha too cold and therefore mingles with his aerobic instructor played by Payal Rohatgi who plays doctor-nurse with him. This is in spite of her being a mentally challenged person. Soha tries her hand anew with the ghazal loving journo, Rahul Khanna. Here, she fails because of Khanna's extra-sensitivity. On the other hand, Rahul Bose considers everything's all right between him and wife Konkona.

However, he falls for his wild film school student (Saba Azad) because of the latter's scripts. At this point, we find Konkona falling for Rahul Khanna. This is another matter that Konkana plays matchmaker between him and Soha. This is intriguing though. However, it's a fact that this trend is developing too fast in India following liberalization of economy and increasing consumerism. Really, it's the effect of break up of joint family system in India, particularly among urbanites. Husbands and wives have been quarreling in Indian society for ages but not leading to break-ups as in the West. Many a wife commits sati by putting herself on the pyre of their dead husband, or by observing sometime too harsh instructions of their partners. Significantly, the wives aren't far behind these days in taking up small matters to their hearts and turning equally vocal and proactive.

Anyway, the movie though good to watch but not to practice is attracting thin crowds in the Capital because of the five movies releasing today. Since the theme centers on the current household scenario, it may attract larger crowd as compared to other releases. The story is good and so is its direction. It begins well but doesn't end up so well. The actors have performed very well even in the wake of too many relationships growing, breaking and bonding. The star cast is huge comprising Irfaan Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Payal Rohatagi and Rahul Bose, to name a few.

As a whole, the movie passes the test. So, why not spare time and some money to watch a galaxy of your favorite stars.

There have been many a movie on sports in Bollywood in the near past, and 'Meerabai Not Out' falls in this category. The movie's USP is that a cricket lover and a successful and charming actor-cum-commentator like Mandira Bedi is playing the lead role in it.
