RAAZ and RAAZ... TMC directors are good friends!

Posted on Jan 01 2009 1:21 AM by Rimsha

RAAZ...THE MYSTERY CONTINUES is being touted as one of the most awaited movies of the New Year, and the latest spine–chilling promos are a testimony to the fact that excitement in the film industry is not without any basis. The young director of the film, Mohit Suri, who made a name for himself with some good and successful films like ZEHER, KALYUG, WOH LAMHE and AWARAPAN, is very confident about his next venture.

When quizzed about whether he felt scared that his film would be compared to the biggest hit of 2002, the super–hit RAAZ, he said that he does but this fear has made him put more effort in the film and he has used it positively rather than negatively. He also clarified that he is still good friends with Vikram Bhatt, whom he considers his guru and mentor, and all the talks of a difference between them is rubbish. He added that the rumor has stemmed from the fact that he and not Vikram was chosen by the Bhatts to do the film.

While a few egoist directors have actually spoiled their relationship after not being offered the sequel to their previous hits (lets not get into the specifics here), there is nothing of that sort between Vikram and Mohit, who remain good friends. And in fact Mohit drops in often to meet Vikram as he finds his company refreshing.

Good, bad and ugly of animation movies in 2008

Posted on Dec 31 2008 1:28 AM by Rimsha

There were quite a few animation films that released in 2008. However, not even one of them turned out to be successful at the box office. ROADSIDE ROMEO at least stood out from animation point of view while JUMBO made waves due to Akshay Kumar factor. However, rest just fizzled completely hence putting a question mark on the future of animation films in India. Here is a low down on the performance of some of the most notable animation films which were unleashed to the audience in the year gone by.
ROADSIDE ROMEO:
If not for Yash Raj Films' practice of promoting their films to the minimal, ROADSIDE ROMEO could well have been the second Bollywood animation film to have worked with the audience after HANUMAN. While one or two have still been decent attempts at the least, the remaining have been plain shoddy.

Things could have just gone right for ROADSIDE ROMEO had it been pitched amongst the audience in a better way. It was released sans any fanfare and worse, the two best parts about the film – its animation and coming together of Saif and Kareena behind the mike – were not just not highlighted enough for the audience.

ROADSIDE ROMEO may not be quite emotionally charged or hilariously funny like its Hollywood counterparts. But still, it is watchable at the least. And for that, most of the credit should go to Tata Elexsi – VCL that has managed to get some stupendous 3D animation in place. Whether it is shot taking, moving frames, transition from one situation to another, lip movements or lighting – everything about ROADSIDE ROMEO comes across as a fresh experience. In fact for those who haven't been exposed to the Hollywood animation flicks, this is a truly unique experience.

SHAH RUKH PROVES HIS METTLE

Posted on Dec 23 2008 2:04 AM by Rimsha

'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' is yet another love story of Yash Raj Films with its favorite star Shah Rukh Khan. The banner has had 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' starring the pair of Shah Rukh opposite Kajol that hit the screens for the longest period. Then, the banner under the guidance of Aditya Chopra made 'Mohabattein' with Shah Rukh, Aishwarya Rai and Amitabh Bachchan. This time, Aditya Chopra comes back after some eight years with his favorite Shah Rukh along with a new face Anushka Sharma. It is said that Yash Chopra himself asked his son Aditya to make one movie in the wake of several of their flicks touching a low graph.
Aditya narrated the story idea to his friend Jaideep Sahni who completed the script in three months. They sought some 60 days' dates from Shah Rukh for the shoot, and also found a fresh face from Bangalore named Anushka. Soon the director began the start-to-finish shoot at the Amritsar club besides their studio in Mumbai. The USP of the movie is that in one song it salutes the super stars of yesteryears. Believe it that all SRK's co-stars like Kajol, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee, obliged him. The movie is a love story but quite different in other ways. First, it's shot in India unlike others in London or Switzerland. Its lead couple faces no opposition from their families. Besides, they wear simple clothes unlike in Aditya's earlier movies. The story begins with Surinder played by Shah Rukh Khan who is a simpleton but completely changes at the sight of Taani played by Anushka Sharma, who is just reverse of him . She is flamboyant and vivacious. But both fall a prey to circumstances and come together. However, Surinder changes into Raj by undergoing a personality change. This is a flaw ; how come Anushka didn't find out that it's her husband? Two, Shah Rukh keeps doing so till the end. Luckily, there comes a change when Anushka is ready to elope with Raj, her dance partner. This is excellent. Anyway, the director and the storywriter are at fault . The movie runs longer than needed and that too when the audience looks for shorter duration. The music by Salim-Sulaiman is good at places. Haule Haule is an excellent composition and Dance Pe Chance is good for foot tapping. However, the other tracks are average. Ravi Chandran's cinematography is perfect. Actingwise, Shah Rukh is superb. Anushka looks like her character even though she is a new face and gels well with ace actor like SRK. Vinay Pathak lends support throughout the movie. The present generation may appreciate the movie. So, the movie is likely to fare well at multiplexes and not so well at others. Luckily, there is no competitor in the field as it's the only release. The fate of the film, according to the actor, is in the hands of God. "Aditya and I feel that God has made this film. We think rab will take care of it and the people who go to watch it. We just want them to smile in this time of depression." Though this is for the third time that Shah Rukh Khan is sporting a moustache after 'Army' and 'Paheli', he is receiving a mixed response for his 'ordinary man with moustache' look in 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'. Most of his fans say, "Shah Rukh definitely looks good without a moustache. He looks so good when he is clean-shaven." However, his producer Chopra considers moustaches and looks a very secondary consideration in judging an actor's capability.Another specialty is that Shah Rukh comes back after more than a year. Two, people really want to go out now. Seventy-five per cent tickets have already gone for the weekend," according to distributors. In Delhi , cinema halls bearing the brunt of low revenues in the past few weeks have a reason to celebrate. Bollywood has seen a drastic fall in number of people visiting theatres post terror attacks. With relations between India and Pakistan on the new low post Mumbai terror attacks, the release of Shah Rukh Khan's much awaited 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' has been postponed in the neighboring country. The film is releasing simultaneously in over 30 countries and over 1200 screens across India today ( December 12th). This includes both analog prints as well as digital cinemas. The producer of Yash Raj Films has decided to postpone the release to a future date, it is reliably learnt. "'Rab Ne Bana De Jodi' is not releasing in Pakistan as the production house has decided that it is not appropriate time to release the film there," the Yash Raj Films official adds, "The final decision to release the film would be decided in due course of time. Shah Rukh Khan is very popular in Pakistan and this move to postpone the release will definitely hit our business," the source further adds.

WATCH FOR YOUR FAVORITE STARS

Isn't it a matter of big relief for India that even in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks in financial capital of India, killing over hundred and injuring several hundreds in Mumbai, five movies are releasing there this Friday? Great indeed. Bravo Mumbaiites!! Of the five movies, 'Dil Kabbadi' is the most romantic entertainer, perhaps. The movie begins with Irfan Khan announcing from the rooftop that husbands and wives have nothing to do with romance! Yes, despite all this, the movie is quite romantic. The movie depicts the true picture of most of the households, if not all. The movie emphasizes that in the most of the cities though husbands and wives live under the same roof, yet there is no love lost among them.

They begin the day with some or the other quarrel among them. However, they soon go to their jobs. The housewives do talk to their confidant neighbors about their day's quarrelsome tales and exchange their problems among them, both at home or in office. This shows that they have no romance or love for each other. No, it's not that. They forget it when the couples meet in the evening after their respective jobs. However, there are a few cases where the quarrel takes a wrong turn. Nowadays, Indian couples are following in the footsteps of the Westerners and therefore husband and wife disputes are growing too fast and entering courtrooms.

In 'Dil Kabaddi', justly titled and meaning that hearts play the game of kabaddi, Irfan finds his wife Soha too cold and therefore mingles with his aerobic instructor played by Payal Rohatgi who plays doctor-nurse with him. This is in spite of her being a mentally challenged person. Soha tries her hand anew with the ghazal loving journo, Rahul Khanna. Here, she fails because of Khanna's extra-sensitivity. On the other hand, Rahul Bose considers everything's all right between him and wife Konkona.

However, he falls for his wild film school student (Saba Azad) because of the latter's scripts. At this point, we find Konkona falling for Rahul Khanna. This is another matter that Konkana plays matchmaker between him and Soha. This is intriguing though. However, it's a fact that this trend is developing too fast in India following liberalization of economy and increasing consumerism. Really, it's the effect of break up of joint family system in India, particularly among urbanites. Husbands and wives have been quarreling in Indian society for ages but not leading to break-ups as in the West. Many a wife commits sati by putting herself on the pyre of their dead husband, or by observing sometime too harsh instructions of their partners. Significantly, the wives aren't far behind these days in taking up small matters to their hearts and turning equally vocal and proactive.

Anyway, the movie though good to watch but not to practice is attracting thin crowds in the Capital because of the five movies releasing today. Since the theme centers on the current household scenario, it may attract larger crowd as compared to other releases. The story is good and so is its direction. It begins well but doesn't end up so well. The actors have performed very well even in the wake of too many relationships growing, breaking and bonding. The star cast is huge comprising Irfaan Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Payal Rohatagi and Rahul Bose, to name a few.

As a whole, the movie passes the test. So, why not spare time and some money to watch a galaxy of your favorite stars.

ABHAY DEOL MEETS WITH SUCCESS

Dibakar Banerjee is a different type of a director. He is neither Subhash Ghai nor Karan Johar. He returns this time with 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye' though it's another enjoyable movie after his earlier 'Khosla Ka Ghosla'. Significantly, his hero Abhay Deol is lucky this time unlike in his earlier flick. He has been very successful in impressing the audience with his performance in this movie though he had earned laurels for his role earlier too.
